My 'lovely' Ferrymead
* * *
AADDDDDDDDVVVVEEEEENNNNTURRRE!
So *Cough* Amazing *Cough*
I choked on my words there, Sorry!
So when we arrived- I was dressed in a Nightmare long dress and apron and to make it worse- they added a bonnet...
It looked really nice for short people,
:(
I'm tall...
So for the day I felt disgusting because of my outfit- and I DO NOT, care that I got it a bit messy...
But that doesNT make my day worse... I guess...The boys wore knickerbockers, a grey shirt, and a cap.
Immigration Activity. There was a table you chose objects, those objects were jobs, I was a shoemaker.
And there was a hat, you chose sicknesses from. you filled in a form for traveling to New Zealand. You chose name, I was Victoria Ellen, And I wasn't healthy, I was sick. With Typhoid Fever.
Moving on-
Pioneer crafts.
It was pretty boring honestly. You could make candles, with wax from whales, and fat from roasts.
And there was this paper bird cage you could make- sort of like an illusion.
There was sewing, rags to a rug.
Packing the Trunk.
There was two trunks. one for essentials, and one for anything else.
Essentials were- clothes, silverware.
And the other trunk was for after the trip.
And my favorite was, The V-Hut!
I like doing chores
apparently.
The chores:
Scrubbing the deck.
Polishing silverware (MY FAVORITE FAVORITE)
Ironing clothes, (Heated with fire)
Sweeping the floor.
Cutting wood with a crosscut saw.
Cleaning clothes.
Cleaning leaves from garden.
Gathering flax for roof. (To keep warm)
And planting beans in paper pot.
- Ladies first
- At school, if your handwriting wasn't straight you were wacked with a ruler
- If you went to NZ you had two trunks, one for the trip, and one for after
- Children seen not heard
- Ladies wore dresses, an apron, and a bonnet
- Men wore, Knickerbockers and a cap
- You had to take care of your shoes because they were hand-made
- School is very very strict, if you talked then your were strapped.
- The roof of the V-hut was made of cabbage tree flax.
- The loo was a long drop, and you moved it whenever it got full.
- Ironed clothes from the heat of the fire.
- Used a crosscut saw for cutting wood.
Some questions
Did they have glass windows? They didn't have windows
Why did ladies go first? A case of men being nice to women. Sad riley was here
How did they get planks? Cut down trees, and smoothed it with a saw
How long did it take to thatch the roof? 30 minutes
How long did it take to cut wood each day? 15 minutes
Were children forced to do chores? No, nothing else to do.
Why did women have to wear dresses? They weren't allowed to wear pants
Why was the oven outside? Because it would catch fire inside.
I enjoyed Ferrymead!
